Carved wooden spiral staircase at a kite surfer's Hawaii estate. Interior by Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

Stable Road Estate Maui

For one of the most famous kite surfing estates in all of Hawaii, I reimagined the interiors, capturing all the magic of this special island.

Magical beach house interior design…

For this Maui compound, I wanted the rooms to be luxuriously comfortable while giving a true sense of place. Never one to be afraid of color, I drenched the rooms in bold tropical tones that immediately capture the essence and beauty that is Hawaii.

The beauty of this tropical bedroom lies beyond its four poster bed and colorful printed linens, through the window and beyond to the turquoise ocean and sandy shores of Paia beach.

The entry of the Freedman main house in Maui is dominated by a spectacular staircase that feels like the backbone to the whole estate. Hand carved by local island craftsmen and wrapped in rope for an island-vibed handrail, the koa wood spiral staircase resembles a fish spine. Vintage Eames stools add a mid-century moment to keep the feeling modern and eclectic. The custom sofa is in a fabric by Peter Dunham, and the cocktail table is by Jayson Home.

The walls are covered in a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth, while a Thomas Hayes bed is dressed in custom linens by Scandia Home and topped with a duvet cover in a Christopher Farr Cloth fabric. The bed curtains are in a Kerry Joyce fabric, and the armchairs are upholstered in a Paper Mills fabric. Complementing the vintage Roger Capron cocktail table is a custom bar cabinet and rug by Marc Phillips. And finally, artwork by Rupprecht Geiger brings a striking accent throughout.
